Acute haemolysis due to concentrated dialysis fluid.

چکیده
Fatal acute haemolysis occurred in a 65-year-old man undergoing regular home haemodialysis for terminal renal failure. Circumstantial evidence indicating that the haemolysis resulted from exposure to concentrated dialysis solution was supported by in-vitro studies. Frank haemolysis in blood samples occurred at a dilution of greater than or equal to 1/2 of dialysis fluid. Osmotic fragility tests of surviving red blood cells showed 47% haemolysis at a dilution of 1/2 and greater than 90% haemolysis at a dilution of 1/1. Urgent design modifications to the proportionating machine are being undertaken to prevent such an accident recurring.

Acute intravascular haemolysis and renal failure due to arsine poisoning.
Two men developed acute intravascular haemolysis after exposure to arsine gas in a metal smelting works. Both survived; one developed acute renal failure and required peritoneal dialysis. His renal function returned to near normal within 3 months. The probable mode of exposure has been investigated and is discussed. The toxic effects of arsine are briefly reviewed. The preventive action taken i...
متن کاملFulminant Wilson's disease with haemolysis and renal failure: copper studies and assessment of dialysis regimens.
Two girls, aged 12 and 17 years, presented with hepatocellular dysfunction and severe haemolysis due to Wilson's disease (hepatolenticular degeneration). This was accompanied by acute renal failure. In the absence of renal function sufficient for the urinary excretion of penicillamine, studies were performed to assess the potential of peritoneal dialysis, ascites removal by ultrafiltration-rein...

OBJECTIVES To describe the incidence and management of haemolysis after transcatheter coil occlusion of the arterial duct. DESIGN Prospective clinical and echocardiographic follow up of patients who have undergone implantation of the Cook detachable duct occlusion coil. SETTING Tertiary paediatric cardiac centre. PATIENTS Five cases of haemolysis (two girls aged 6 and 11 months; three boy...
متن کاملRifampicin-induced acute renal failure: a series of 60 patients.
BACKGROUND Since 1971, 55 case-reports of rifampicin-induced ARF have been published, but systematic data on this condition are not available, in view of the disparate nature of the observations. METHODS We retrospectively assessed prevalence, clinical and biochemical features, and prognostic factors of 60 consecutive cases (41 males/19 females, age 22-68 years), who were admitted to the Iasi...
متن کاملAcute renal failure in falciparum malaria--increasing prevalence in some areas of India--a need for awareness.
Twenty-six cases (4.8%) from a total of 540 patients with acute renal failure (ARF) of diverse aetiology had ARF in association with falciparum malaria. Their ages ranged from 15 to 85 years (mean 31.2). Urinary sediment abnormalities and proteinuria (less than 1 g/24 h) were observed in 15 (57.7%) cases. The probable underlying factors leading to ARF were: volume depletion 17 (65.3%), intravas...
